Verdeluna has been open for a couple of years now and got off to a shaky start trying to do too much. They now have an excellent limited menu at fixed prices. Lunch at Euros 7.50 is a choice of lasagne including classic, vegetarian and seafood; the dinner menu at Euros 16 for 3 courses and wine is fantastic value with a menu predominantly fish. The owner/chef is from Puglia in the far south so the food is predominantly from that region. As the restaurant can only handle 12-14 people at once it can be like private dining. There are outside tables in the piazza. Excellent quality and value. Service can be a bit erratic on busy nights. - Bargadining

We drove up through the snow on December 22nd for a fantastic lunch. The skiing had not begun so il Casone was not as busy as it gets, but it was still set for about 200! The meal was, as always spectacular. Fantastic antipasto of fresh prosciutto, polenta fritta, ragu and porcini. Followed by varieties of fresh home made pastas. There were 4 of us so we just got a selection of everything. It was of course too much to eat. Main courses of cinghiale (wild boar), maiale and garfagnana sausage were all excellent. Coffee by the big log fire. Be sure to book at weekends as it can get very busy! - Bargadining

The ristorante Fontanamaggio da Franco, in Parco Kennedy has been improved for this season by the removal of the barren marquee! The food is still excellent, particularly the fish. I had a mullet steamed en-papillote with fennel which was perfectly cooked. The pizzas cooked on the wood oven are still the best in Barga. Has a good wine list, but expensive by Barga standards. Busy in summer but often deserted out of season. - Bargadining

The family Bartolomei opened la Gelateria in Barga in 2006. It serves absolutely the best home made ice cream in the Garfagnana (also a branch in Fornaci di Barga) Interesting varieties depending on season. In summer the lemon and basil sorbet is refreshing. Their Fig and Ricotta ice cream is spectacular, or try the Amarena (cherry) Closed Wednesdays, peccato! Also do coffee and pastries. - Bargadining

l`Osteria never fails. The food is always excellent and Riccardo and his staff are undoubtedly the friendliest around. The piatto dell`Osteria is a great antipasto, and the tagliata di manzo (grilled steak with herb/oil dressing) good value. Pecorino with honey and walnuts are equally good as starter or dessert. Excellent house wine. With summer arriving Piazza Angelio is becoming lively with live music. - Casa Fontana

A recent visit to the Eremita was disappointing. The welcome was off-hand, the service was erratic and the speciality of the house `Spaghetti dei Frate` was extremely light on trout! Still an atmospheric venue and amazing setting. The grilled trout was excellent. - Bargadining
