Rifugio La Mesta, Trassilico - Trassilico is worth a visit. Set on a hilltop beneath the brooding Pania, it commands a view across the valley to Barga. Walk up to the ruined Rocca (castle) before your meal at la Maesta, a simple rifugio (hostel) with sleeping accommodation. The food is excellent, home cooked, with trout a speciality, and the best chocolate cake!! - Bargadining
Il Garfagnino, Borgo a Mozzano - On the main Lucca to Castelnuovo road just past Calavorno (going N) Simple traditional tuscan food. Excellent bruschetta; tasty bistecca di maiale (pork chop)
Pleasant friendly service. Slightly bland interior and road noise outside, but a good simple osteria - Bargadining
Trattoria da Riccardo, Barga - On the Fosso just outside the mediaeval gates of Barga da Riccardo's is insignificant from the outside but for food it is unmissable. Riccardo is the master of the wood oven Try a warm seafood salad to start, then his mixed roast meats: rabbit, pork rib, chicken.
Fantastic west facing terrace with spectacular view to the mountains. Great value at €10 lunch with wine. - Bargadining
Da Aristo, Barga - Bang in the middle of Barga life! da Aristo's is a bar with a difference. Ask for a piatto freddo and Marino will slice you a special selection of hams, salami, pecorino cheese and his special "linchetto" which you can eat indoors or at the tables in the piazza with a glass of his local red wine. A venue for impromptu music by many of the talented local musicians. - Bargadining
Caffe Capretz, Barga - Sadly in need of a facelift. The outdoor area under the loggia has some atmosphere but inside none. Basic tourist food and pricey. - Bargadining
La Mocchia, Barga - la Mocchia da Lorenzo is a traditional country Osteria, with good local food, and a great atmosphere. Slightly off the beaten track..it is worth seeking out. The antipasto is gorgeous. Tagliata di manzo cooked on Lorenzo's wood oven is a must. Excellent wines and a great bar - Bargadining
