A fascinating place to visit and dine. In the spectacular setting of a former monastery carved into the cliff face, the restaurant opens onto a small courtyard in front of the church. Trout is one of the specialities, provided by local fish farms. Slightly off the beaten track on the road from Gallicano to the Grotta del Vento, it is well worth the effort of getting there. - Bargadining

The wood fired oven is used to perfection. A basket of freshly baked thin, crispy foccaccia will keep you going till the antipasto appears. The fantasia di antipasto is a meal in itself, prosciutto, farro salad, fried polenta with ragu; then there are the roast meats from the wood oven. Tagliata di manzo with ruccola was cooked to perfection. The lamb cops a bit overcooked. Four of us dined for Euro 100 including wine. Excellent food and friendly service. - Bargadining

Sadly Magna Pizza is not up to the `Barga Standard`...yet. The pizza is doughy and toppings bland. There are far better (and cheaper) pizzas in Barga, made in the traditional way. We hope that they will improve. - Pizzamaster

Opened on 20 May 2007. Not yet sampled, but perhaps one for the next trip to Barga. Grateful to have more information - proprietors, web site, email, telephone, etc. - Admin

Sophisticated Tuscan is a new concept in Barga! Take traditional garfagnino ingredients and serve with a bit of `nouvelle cuisine` panache, and watch the chef on a large screen as he prepared your meal! Luckily the fancy presentation has not detracted from the excellent quality of the food. Newly opened in a restored cantina, with brick ceiling. Try the grilled duck with chestnut tart or the rose of smoked salmon, both excellent. The bocconcino di vitellu was also great. Price reasonable (but may rise as the summer season arrives) Service was a bit erratic, but friendly and attentive, during their first week but will improve. Certainly a new experience in Barga. - Bargadining

Pictures of this restaurant (1)Rifugio La Mesta, Trassilico -
Trassilico is worth a visit. Set on a hilltop beneath the brooding Pania, it commands a view across the valley to Barga. Walk up to the ruined Rocca (castle) before your meal at la Maesta, a simple rifugio (hostel) with sleeping accommodation. The food is excellent, home cooked, with trout a speciality, and the best chocolate cake!! - Bargadining
